One of the most popular and iconic landmarks in San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge.
Travel Tuesday - Golden Gate Bridge
Here’s some cool facts about the bridge…
-Construction began in 1933 and ended in 1937.
-It cost $35 million to build, which was a LOT of money back in the 1930’s.
-It was the longest suspension bridge in the world until Japan built the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge in 1964.
-It weights nearly 887,000 tons!
-It has only been closed 3 times due to weather.
-It helps shape the fog.
-The military wanted it to be painted in stripes for visibility reasons.
-The bridge’s signature color was not intended to be permanent.
-It was supposed to be painted carbon black and steel gray.
-The toll cost for a 2 axle vehicle is $7.50
